Seismic and conspicuous events have occurred since this ranking was last compiled in 2014.

These represent a pandemic, Brexit, and more recently, a global shortage of microchips. Oh, and the UK has new rules banning the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles from 2030 unless they're semi-electrified. In view of such challenges, it is not surprising that the automotive industry faces considerable obstacles. Despite all this, the UK car industry has had its share of successes and where there have been problems, like Jaguar and Aston Martin for example, bold and hopeful stimulus plans are underway.

Of course, this record is a reflection of what has happened in the 125 or so years since car manufacturing began in Britain and also when Autocar began writing about it, and it is now timely to reflect on the turbulent seven years since the last time we reveal it. . The previous ranking was created with the votes of you, dear readers, but this time we decided to boldly choose the top hundred.
